Importance of Brushing Teeth

Our mouths are one of the main portals for viruses and bacteria to enter our body. So for someone brushing their teeth on a daily basis, the risks of getting sick are much lower. To most people, brushing their teeth everyday may seem like a nuisance. However, proper brushing actually has many benefits which we will now discuss.

Proper Brushing Techniques

According to the American Dental Association, a brushing session should take at least two minutes. Most people don't come close to this number. The proper way to brush, and this goes for kids brushing teeth too, is to start on your outer, upper teeth. Gentle, circular motions beginning on either the right or left side will be fine. Then you will continue brushing the outer, lower teeth. From there you will move to the inner, upper teeth, making sure you pay close attention to your molars on each side. You will finish the process by brushing your inner, bottom teeth, and then completing the task by brushing the chewing surface.

A small head, soft bristle tooth brush is recommended for removal of plaque and those hard to get places. As far as toothpaste goes you have a variety of choices these days. Some people need tarter control, others have sensitive teeth, you will have to purchase toothpaste based on your individual situation.

Filling, Crowns and Gumlines

You might want to spend a little more time on fillings, crowns and gumlines, because these are places that bacteria love to hide. Someone brushing their teeth in a hurry may overlook these crucial areas.

How Many Times a Day Should I Brush My Teeth?

The ideal number depends on how many times you eat a day. Ideally you should brush after every meal, but this is not always possible. Some folks will use a mouthwash if they are at work, and in theory this is better than not brushing at all. For kids brushing teeth the same rule applies.

We must also mention that brushing your tongue can shake loose bacteria and freshen your breath too. If you wake up with a bad taste in your mouth brushing your tongue will eliminate bad breath by removing bacteria.

Streptococcus Mutans

This crazy word - streptococcus mutans - is the name given to a strain of bacteria that produces acid that eats the enamel on your teeth.. in short, it's a monster that creates cavities.

Spending a little more time brushing your teeth daily will save you a lot of pain (cavities, fillings, root canals), plus money. It's a habit that sometimes needs adjusting and, in the long run it can save a person from a lot of trouble and pain.
